17-YEAR MILITARY REGIME General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the Socialist party government of Salvador Allende in a military coup d'etat in 1973. The events that followed have given this most controversial 20th century leader his reputation as one of the most ruthless dictators of our time. On our tour you will take a profound look into these events, how present day Chile has emerged and what is shaping the future of our country. The highlights of our tour include the following: * The Altar de la Patria, La Moneda, the government palace bombed by the Air Force on September 11th, 1973. * Villa Grimaldi Peace Park - One of the main detention and torture centres in which about 4,000 people were held during the first years of the military regime. * The General Cemetery - You will visit some of the tombs where important figures who died during the Pinochet era were buried. You will also see a memorial honouring those people who disappeared and were executed then. * Augusto Pinochet Foundation - Here members voice their views about the causes of the coup and the many ways General Pinochet's government was beneficial to Chile. (Depending on availability of tour). Tours depart at approx. 9am and return at approx. 6pm. Price includes transportation, a fluent English-speaking guide, and entrance fees where applicable (lunch is not included). RATES:
